Photo by @stephen_matera | The desert surrounding Hanksville, Utah, is a surreal mix of canyons, mountains, and plateaus. Hanksville was first settled in the late 1800s and was a supply post for Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang, who would hide out at nearby Robbers Roost Canyon. The surrounding area is a nearly six-million-acre wilderness that was the last in the lower 48 to be mapped by the USGS. Photo by @hellokrisdavidson | Reindeer travel the farthest of any terrestrial mammal, with the most extensive migrations occurring in the spring and fall. The Sami people, who have inhabited the northern regions of Fenno-Scandinavia and Russia for at least 2,500 years, are the reindeer keepers. This image was made during a spring migration in the Laponian area, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Sweden, as a herd left winter grounds to go to calving grounds in the mountains. It was a surreal adventure through a wintery dreamscape, and it's easy to understand how the Sami language has over a hundred different words to describe snow. The evening before, as we moved through a clearing, a strange snow fog descended and everything was white in every direction, with no separation of land and sky. If not for the Sami, who can sense their way through white nothingness, it would have been terrifying. #Reindeer#Laponia#Sweden#Sami

The birds depend on lemmings during breeding years and only succeed in high years of the lemming population cycle. Follow me @kiliiiyuyan for more from the north and beyond. #alaska#wildlife#NPR-A

Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | The parks in New York City morph with the seasons, but few change as dramatically as Bryant Park. From November through February the lawn is converted into an ice rink—the only free skating rink in the city. The rink is surrounded by glass-enclosed shopping kiosks that glow like a circuit board swarming with ants. To view more of our world from above, follow @geosteinmetz.
Photo by @andy_bardon | Since 1904 the Rosales family has been producing tequila just west of Guadalajara, Mexico. Three generations later, they continue to stick to tradition at their distillery named Cascahuin, meaning "Mountain of Light." Here the family loads blue agave into an earthen pit to be cooked for days on end. The juice is eventually extracted from these cooked "pinas," fermented, and bottled to become what we know as tequila. Most modern distilleries use a more industrial method with machinery and additives to create the flavor and color they want. But the Rosales family has gone back to their roots. In collaboration with sustainability expert David Suro, they have brought back the true artisanal process that was used generations ago—much to the delight of connoisseurs. Photos by @michaelgeorge // Sponsored by @intercontinental // After living in New York for 12 years, I am delighted to share some hidden gems that provide the same beauty and wonder as the most popular tourist destinations but are much less crowded. To begin, taking in sunrise or sunset from the North 5th Street Pier provides a gorgeous view of Manhattan. Next you'll see that the Morgan Library & Museum has one of the most spectacular interiors in the city. If you go when it opens, you might have it all to yourself. The northeast corner of Central Park boasts winding, tree-lined paths with beautiful lakes and the Conservatory Garden. Did you know there is a gorgeous cocktail bar in Grand Central Terminal? The Campbell is the travel hub's best kept secret. And finally, the classic exterior of the Barclay Hotel stands out against the glass buildings surrounding it and warms up the block on a cold winter’s day. Inside the lobby is a communal gathering space with an elaborate ceiling, as well as the lively restaurant and bar. There are also plenty of nooks to rest in after you've spent a long day exploring this new side of the city. // With every journey you take, enhance your stay with @intercontinental Hotel & Resorts for an unforgettable experience. #InterContinentalLife
