great flavour in that you taste so much yet nothing crowds out anything else, and the ingredients make themselves known but not in any flamboyant way; korean food and i are getting snuggly...ever so slightly
Peking duck and king brown mushroom noodles at @chuukasydney . Another place that does modern Asian cuisine really well! They served peking duck a little differently here because they don't give you the crispy skin and a second dish with the meat, you just get the whole duck as 1 dish. The duck meat was cooked perfectly, it was so juicy and everyone got such thick pieces in their pancake. It was a really good start to the meal. We ordered a few more dishes but I felt the noodles were done really beautifully. Those little rosettes are chee cheong fun (thick rice noodles) wrapped in spirals with a nice crisp, and the mushrooms were sliced so paper thin they just kind of melted.
Chuuka is also a nice walk along the waterfront if you're coming from The Star.
Banana roti and Thai tea ice cream in pic 1, and chicken pomelo salad and fried whole snapper in pic 2 at @longchim . This restaurant was opened by David Thompson and my mom has been wanting to try it for awhile. We were both really glad that it wasn't all hype and no substance because the food really delivered! So often with modern Asian cuisine it feels like the flavour gets watered down or it tries too hard to be "something", but all the dishes we ordered were cooked tastefully and with respect to the ingredients.
I loved the fish! So crunchy that you could chew through most of the bones, and the tangy sauce complements it well. Adding pomelo was a nice spin in the chicken salad as it still allowed all the sauce to stand out. Dessert was a really big win because they were so generous with the bananas, you can't see it in the picture but there were huge chunks of bananas sandwiched in the roti which had a roti canai-like texture. The Thai tea ice cream was really good. I can't stress this enough. Restaurant has a cool vibe with really good food, the turnover that we saw when we had our dinner was insane!
