What shoes should you lift with❓👟
I get this question very often about what is the best choice of footwear when lifting weights. There are many good choices in terms of shoe selection depending on your goals, budget and performance... but a good rule of thumb is to STAY AWAY FROM RUNNING SHOES‼️
When you are lifting weights you want to be able to generate force, stability and coordination YOURSELF. It is a TERRIBLE idea to rely on your shoe (or any other external tool for that matter) to give you the stability necessary to execute compound movements (which should be in your program). 🔑
By providing external stability to your foot (i.e. a super comfortable athletic shoe), you eliminate the necessity for you to have to develop that ‘internal stability’ yourself. And that internal stability is what is going to prevent you from hurting yourself in real life situations.🧨
So a great lifting shoe should allow you to be in contact with the floor and not provide too much comfort or stability and should be flat soled to allow you to generate that force and stability yourself.
Good examples of this are any type of chuck or vans, or even barefoot shoes (however I would be careful about making that transition to fast without working on foot mobility and connectivity first).🔌
As for squat and deadlift shoes, unless you are a powerlifter, and are going to compete in those shoes, I don’t see a need for them.
